Geometry and Rigidity of Groups

Summer school at the WWU Münster, Germany

Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28, 2009

This summer school on Geometry and Rigidity of Groups is mainly aimed at graduate students, PhD students, and post-docs. The local organizers are Arthur Bartels, Wolfgang Lück, and Roman Sauer. The summer school is funded by the Graduiertenkolleg Analytische Topologie und Metageometrie and Wolfgang Lück's Leibniz award.

Program

There will be 3 lecture series consisting of 4 lectures each. The first lecture starts Monday at 10:00, and the last lecture ends Friday at 11:45. The lectures series are:

Uri Bader (Haifa)	Rigidity and the Weyl group
Oliver Baues (Karlsruhe)	Arithmetic groups of automorphisms in group theory and topology
Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace (Louvain-la-Neuve)	CAT(0)-spaces and their isometry groups

In addition, there will be lectures by Clara Löh, Wolfgang Lück, and Narutaka Ozawa.

Location & How to get there

All lectures take place at the Mathematisches Institut - Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster (Germany). For a map click here. The nearest airport is Münster-Osnabrück (FMO). There is a bus (line S50) that takes about 40 min from the airport to the main train station of Münster. For train connections to Münster, check here; in the search form just write "ms" in the "Destination" field. This will determine the correct train station "Münster(Westf)Hbf".

Accomodation

Participants are asked to make reservations themselves. If you have problems making a reservation or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us (email to Julia Fiege (on vacation till 13th July) or Roman Sauer). We recommend the following hotels. Use the group code "Summer school" for reservations.

Stadthotel Münster	group rate: 72 EUR; deadline for reservations under the group rate: July 13.
Hotel Schlosspark	group rate: 75 EUR; deadline for reservations under the group rate: July 23.
Ibis-Hotel Münster	group rate: 76,26 EUR; deadline for reservations under the group rate: June 26.
Hotel Jellentrup	group rate: 64 EUR; deadline for reservations under the group rate: July 23.

There is also a nice youth hostel (JugendGästehaus Aasee), which is about 2.4 km from the Mathematisches Institut.

Registration

If you want to registrate, please write an email to Julia Fiege (julia.fiege(at)math.uni-muenster.de; Mathematisches Institut, WWU Münster, Einsteinstr. 62, 48149 Münster) or Roman Sauer. If you are a graduate student or PhD-student, please ask your mentor or advisor to write a short letter of recommendation to the above address.
There will be a registration fee of 30 EUR. Along with your registration email you can indicate whether you are requesting financial support. The deadline to apply for funding is July 1. We will tell you as soon as possible but at latest a few days after the deadline to what extend we can support your visit to Münster.
